As Time Goes By
Casablanca is te kenschetsen als een romantische thriller, een liefdesverhaal neergezet in de setting van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De personages worden geconfronteerd met de keuze tussen goed en kwaad.
Het verhaal is gesitueerd in december 1941, in Casablanca. Een man en een vrouw ontmoeten elkaar bij toeval. Ze hebben kort daarvoor (in het voorjaar 1940 in Parijs) een hartstochtelijke relatie gehad, maar zijn elkaar uit het oog verloren. Hoe dat allemaal kwam en hoe dat moet aflopen vormt de kern van de spanningsboog.
Het liedje As time goes by geeft de essentie van het verhaal weer.
