Boek en film: Solaris (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1972)

The interest of Tarkovsky for the science fiction novel Solaris (1961) of the Polish author Stanislaw Lem is understandable: both artists explore the realm of myths and the unconscious innerworld of their protagonists.

They use metaphors to express their fascination by a reality beyond the borders of human perception.
Stanislaw Lem depicts the highly scientific exploration of the planet Solaris as a religious quest.
The novel Solaris contains throughout the narration of the futuristic story many thoughtful passages like:
“Man has gone out to explore other worlds and other civilizations without having explored his own labyrinth of dark passages and secret chambers, and without finding what lies beyond doorways that he himself has sealed.” (p 164).
The imagery of science fiction films as SOLYARIS (1972) and 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY (Stanley Kubrick, 1968) and DARK STAR (John Carpenter, 1974) has influenced many designers, among them Marc Newson.
